HOMER orients SAGA's old and new scholars
HOMER Foundation Inc recently spearheaded an Orientation Program for Magsaysay Saga’s old and new Educational Assistance Program scholars for School Year 2011-2012, last June 18, 2011. Fourteen (14) Scholars from Saga, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, graced the said orientation along with their parents.
During the said event, various talks and sessions were conducted aimed at developing the holistic character of the scholars as they embark on a new academic journey this year. Unlike previous EAP orientations, an increased focus on other important aspects of a student’s life was brought together during this year’s version. Participants had a snapshot of what was given during the 3rd Annual Magsaysay Youth Leadership Camp, as a topic on Career Visioning was given, where Ms. Jill Reyes, provided an array of sessions to help our scholars identify their future jobs and the way Magsaysay positions itself as a leader in providing employment opportunities.
Ms. Reyna Carillo also facilitated the film viewing session of “2 Million Minutes”, where the highlight of the program was drawn out. Parents and students, during the synthesis part, were able to level off each other’s expectations by providing inputs on what young people can do more or less, in comparison to other nationalities’ young people. It brought about an important informal dialogue with the idea of building consensus and understanding between parents and scholars. The parents expressed their concern over their overly studious children, with less or no time for household chores, concern over too much barkada time and too much focus on computer grades. Meanwhile, students also wanted to reform their ways by committing to having less computer time and focus on goals with balanced leisure time.
The scholars were also re-acquainted with the EAP Guidelines, as Mr. Jong Pablo of HOMER Foundation, ran them through the important portions of their scholarship grant.
