Rizal's Sesquicentennial Birth Anniversary Celebrated
The crowd of more than 150,000 gathered at Luneta Park, June 19, Sunday to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of the country’s hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. Different sectors such as the academe, government, LGU’s, religious groups, corporations and the likes witnessed the historical event.
The Department of Tourism, through the National Park Development Committee Head, Juliet Villegas requested Magsaysay Maritime Corporation (MMC) to serve as the event’s marshals. Over a hundred MIS cadets, MIS alumni cadets that are now connected to MMC and Magsaysay employees volunteered to assist to ensure that the lining towards Rizal monument will move smoothly. The cadets, who were in the area as early as 6:30 stayed alert and smart all throughout despite the rain. The AFP group and designated personnel from PNP were tasked to oversee order, making the MMC the only civilian guards present.
Some of the attendees include the descendants of Rizal; Magsaysay President, Doris Ho; Magsaysay People Resources Corp COO Marlon Roño; Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim and Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa. Lim and Ochoa led the cutting of a giant carrot - walnut cake, of more than 8 feet high. The cake was donated by the MIHCA group lead by the Baking and Pastry Arts Studies Chef Instructors.
